Chinese restaurants in the United States range from steam-table lunch counters to white-tablecloth Cantonese seafood halls, and most fall somewhere in between: a laminated menu, a lunch special board, and combo plates priced a few dollars below the dinner menu. Ordering by number off the menu is normal and speeds things up, especially at takeout counters. Family-style ordering, where a table shares several dishes with rice rather than each person getting an individual entree, is standard at sit-down spots and usually cheaper per person. Many neighborhood restaurants are cash-preferred or charge a small card fee, so it is worth asking or checking the door before you order. Delivery apps cover most areas, but calling the restaurant directly is often faster and avoids the markup.
Hours are published for 7 days a week. On most of those days it is open 11:30 amβ2:30 pm. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. You can reach Zhangliang Malatang at (510) 647-8563; calling is usually the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or directions.

The food was great, but the waiters are the worst people I have seen. The restaurant is a self serve where you select your own food and all the restaurant does is boil it in a broth. I thought that since I MY SELF made my meal, and didn't interact with any staff in the process to help me, they didn't deserve a tip. But when I went to pay and selected no tip, they took my card and selected 15% tip for themselves, without my consent. That is fraud, I should have a right to not tip.

First malatang experience in Berk but not my first rodeo, this place has all types of selection from meats to veggies! I picked every meat possible except for mussels, I absolutely loved the sausage selection and the lamb. All were very fresh! Will be back to try their tomato soup!

Note: thanks for the chat. I do believe there is no need a push to customer especially when the queue is long. A direct payment at the counter would be a better choice such like chipotle. Food is clean and good. Seats are not comfortable, tbh. More like a classroom layout. You wonβt go wrong with their self-assist sauce bar. Adjust your spicy level as needed. Those Cantonese servers are extremely rude. My strategy is to do what I would like to do, whatever their face looks like. The waiter was staring at you when you tip and literally and immediately grabbed your card and tapped on their machine. He asked: βYou choose 15%, right?β They demonstrate the worst-trained waiters would be like. π

This place always serves their DIY hot pot piping hot like roof-of-your-mouth-burnt hot. Itβs one of our favorite hotpotβs in berk. Iβm sad they close in between 2pm to 5pm because I always crave it around 3pm! Once you come in, you navigate towards the bowls and you can grab whatever you want with the tongs. Then set it on a scale and choose the soup base. The cost is per pound of food. I like the classic bone broth. But even mild or not spicy, is quite spicy. They also have a dry pot version, where they just sautΓ© all the items you picked out in some sort of mala sauce. But I find the soups much tastier. Atmosphere is not much. They have a tendency to turn Tables over pretty quickly. And many will just eat and bounce. Not really a linger type of restaurant.
